At the Center for Educational Networks and Impacts, we offer collaborative research support to the Virginia Tech community. The Center consults with researchers on broader impact design, data management plans, statistical analysis and interpretation, and external evaluation. We have contributed to successful proposals in numerous programs at the National Science Foundation as well as other consortiums and educational entities. We also support grant-writing and outreach with local schools and museums through a growing liaison network that already includes the Science Museum of Western Virginia, Montgomery County Public Schools, Floyd County Public Schools, and Radford City Public Schools. In addition to evaluation of events and grant projects, we conduct our own research. Dr. McNair is working with an interdisciplinary team to increase the diversity of career paths in the VT ECE department.
Dr. Newbill is exploring the barriers to engineering education for students in rural areas and creating ways of Broadening Participation.
Another current project, led by Dr. Sue Magliaro, is funded by the VT Office of Economic Development’s Vibrant Virginia program and brings together teachers and businesses to improve internship opportunities in SW Virginia.
The PRIMED data system — Partnering Research and Impact Measurement for Economic Development” — is the university’s source for information related to P-12 outreach and research activities. We are developing this system in partnership with IT to allow the user to investigate the number, nature, location, and potential impact of Virginia Tech activities, programs, and partnerships with our preK-12 partners across the Commonwealth, the nation, and the world. Data are mined from the university’s data commons and verified with the home units to ensure complete and accurate information.
