Summer Teacher Workshops
CENI offers expense-paid teacher workshops for regional public school teachers.
For Summer 2026, we are offering two separate programs for K–12 teachers in Southwest Virginia. While both workshops focus on innovative, place-based learning, they have distinct themes and experiences. Both programs will take place June 23–24, 2026.
Please read the descriptions below carefully and indicate which program you are applying for in the application form.
If you choose to apply to both programs, please complete the application two times, one for each and indicate which workshop is your top choice.
Engineering Integration Workshop
This hands-on workshop supports teachers from any discipline in integrating engineering concepts into their existing curriculum. Participants will:
- Explore systems thinking and engineering design principles
- Engage in interactive, classroom-ready activities
- Connect with university faculty and regional partners
- Develop or refine a lesson or module to implement during the school year
The focus is on practical, adaptable strategies that help students see connections between engineering and real-world challenges — regardless of subject area.
Immersive Environments Workshop – Get Us Out of Here!
This workshop explores how immersive environments — both digital and physical — can transform teaching and learning.
Immersive environments include:
- Virtual and augmented reality
- Large-screen environments (IMAX, domes, CAVE, Cube)
- Outdoor education
- Field trips (historic buildings, labs, museums, etc.)
Designed to provide focused time for curricular design, this workshop will allow educators to:
- Reflect on the educational value of place-based learning and immersive environments
- Visit immersive environments designed for a range of educational objectives
- Hear from educators, technologists, and designers working in immersive spaces
- Develop plans for incorporating immersive experiences into curricular goals for the upcoming school year
